South Windsor Post Office

By Mrs. Pauline Henry

For many years, the Town of South Windsor had three post offices; South Windsor, East Windsor Hill, and Wapping. In 1970, the modern post office building, depicted in this square, was erected on Sullivan Avenue adjacent to the Town Hall. The Wapping post office was officially closed, and with it, the old historic Wapping name began to disappear. For over one hundred years, the Wapping post office was located in homes, taverns and stores. The Grant Tavern and the Billings Store, both of with were located on the corner of Buckland Road and Ellington Road, served as post offices. The last Wapping post office was located in the Burrill Shopping Center on Oakland Road.
