Elmer House

By Mrs. Mary Cowles

This beautiful old colonial house was built in the late 1700’s; however, the builder is not known with certainty.  John Elmer purchased 100 acres of property in 1759 from John Boynton.  The house is believed to have been a part of this sale.  In 1786, John’s twin sons, Dan and Alex Elmer, “split” the house, each living in one half of the house! Upon Alex’s death, Dan became the sole owner.  Dan’s daughter, Cloe, married Sam Avery.  The Avery Families were prominent landowners of that area of Town.  The house has been restored and is a beautiful example of colonial architecture.
