A person in a blue shirt and brown shoes is working on a white horse, holding a tool near its front hoof, on a patterned carpet background. To the right, a woman in a yellow outfit with a green hat is sitting in front of a fireplace with flames, working on a piece of fabric, with various tools and a paper nearby.

Blacksmith Shop

By Mrs. Marguerite Karlsen

Blacksmith shops, one of our early industries, have been located literally all over the Town of South Windsor. One of the first blacksmiths was Thomas Burnham. Joseph Rockwell had a blacksmith shop on Main Street. Increase Clapp was the noted Blacksmith of East Windsor Hill. (Incidentally, in 1820, he was elected sheriff, so was a blacksmith by day and a sheriff by night!) Other smiths include Nathan Pelton, John Moore, Mr. House of Wapping, Nathaniel Burnham, James Crickmore, William Stoughton and Benjamin Gilman.
