The Wood Library
By Mrs Ida FiskeThe Wood Memorial Library, the "gem of South Windsor," was erected for the Town in 1926 by William R. Wood. It was dedicated as a memorial to his father, Dr. William Wood and his mother, Mary Lyman Ellsworth Wood. Dr. Wood, a physician, was also a nationally known taxidermist and ornithologist. He prepared a collection of stuffed birds that was unequaled in this country at the time. Much of his work was done here in South Windsor at his residence in East Windsor Hill. The Wood is now operated as a library, museum and cultural center, containing an ever-growing collection of materials relating to local history. Large permanent displays of Native American artifacts, local birds, early American furniture and artworks are housed in the museum. The Wood remains a vibrant center for study, education and entertainment.
